What is Clarithromycin?
Clarithromycin is a powerful macrolide antibiotic designed to effectively fight bacterial infections within the body. It is commonly prescribed for a range of infections, especially those targeting the skin and respiratory system. Moreover, clarithromycin is often combined with other medications to tackle stomach ulcers linked to Helicobacter pylori.
Important Information
For optimal results, it?s crucial to take clarithromycin for the full prescribed duration, even if you start feeling better before the infection is completely eradicated. Skipping doses can increase the likelihood of developing antibiotic-resistant infections. Please remember, clarithromycin is not intended for treating viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
This medication should not be used if you are allergic to clarithromycin or similar antibiotics, have a history of jaundice or liver issues related to this drug, or if you have liver or kidney disease while taking colchicine.
Keep your healthcare provider informed about all medications you are currently taking or any that you intend to start or stop. Many drugs can interact with clarithromycin, and certain combinations may need to be avoided.
Before Taking This Medicine
Do not take clarithromycin if you have a known allergy to it or related antibiotics like azithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin, or if you have:
- Had jaundice or liver issues caused by clarithromycin
- Liver or kidney disease while using colchicine
Be aware that several medications can cause adverse reactions when combined with clarithromycin. Your doctor may need to adjust your treatment if you are taking:
- Cisapride
- Pimozide
- Lovastatin or simvastatin
- Ergotamine or dihydroergotamine
To ensure clarithromycin is right for you, inform your doctor if you have ever experienced:
- Heart problems
- Long QT syndrome (personal or family history)
- Coronary artery disease
- Myasthenia gravis
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease
- Diabetes
- An electrolyte imbalance (such as low potassium or magnesium)
Clarithromycin may pose risks to an unborn baby; therefore, effective birth control is advised during treatment. Notify your doctor immediately if you become pregnant.
How to Take Clarithromycin
Always take clarithromycin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Follow all instructions on your prescription label diligently. Do not modify the dosage or extend the duration beyond what is advised.
Avoid using this medication for any unverified conditions and never share it with others, even if they display similar symptoms.
You can take standard tablets and oral suspension (liquid) with or without food, though clarithromycin extended-release tablets should be taken with food.
Swallow extended-release tablets whole; do not crush, chew, or break them.
Typically, clarithromycin is prescribed for a duration of 7 to 14 days. Complete the full course, even if your symptoms improve, as missing doses may increase the risk of a resistant infection. Remember, this medication is ineffective against viral infections like the flu or cold.
Store clarithromycin in its original container at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
If you are on multiple medications, adhere to all directions from your doctor and review the instructions accompanying each medication. Do not alter your doses or schedule without consulting your healthcare provider.
