Darbepoetin alfa is a powerful agent that stimulates erythropoiesis, mirroring the action of endogenous erythropoietin. Unlike the natural hormone and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO), which each possess three N-linked carbohydrate chains, darbepoetin alfa is distinguished by its five carbohydrate chains. These extra sugar residues, structurally identical to those in the endogenous hormone, contribute to a significantly extended half-life for darbepoetin alfa, optimizing its in vivo activity. Notably, despite these structural enhancements, darbepoetin alfa retains a highly specific affinity for the erythropoietin receptor.
As a vital growth factor, erythropoietin primarily boosts the production of red blood cells, while its receptors are also present on various tumor cell surfaces, highlighting its broad physiological relevance.
