Darbepoetin alfa is designed to enhance erythropoiesis, mimicking the natural processes of erythropoietin. With five N-linked carbohydrate chains compared to the three found in natural and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO), this formulation offers significant benefits. The additional sugar chains do not alter the molecular structure but extend the half-life of darbepoetin alfa, resulting in improved in vivo efficacy. Despite its unique composition, darbepoetin alfa binds specifically and effectively to the erythropoietin receptor.
