What is Ciprofloxacin?
Ciprofloxacin, a powerful antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone category, is designed to effectively combat a wide range of bacterial infections. This antibiotic is reserved for infections that cannot be treated with safer alternatives, as fluoroquinolones may lead to serious or even disabling side effects, such as tendon ruptures or nerve damage.
Important Information
Ciprofloxacin has the potential to cause serious side effects, including tendon issues, nerve damage, and significant mood changes. If you notice symptoms such as headaches, irritability, numbness, confusion, or unexpected joint pain, stop taking the medication and consult your healthcare provider immediately.
In rare cases, ciprofloxacin may cause damage to the aorta, leading to life-threatening bleeding. Seek emergency medical help if you experience severe and persistent pain in your chest, abdomen, or back.
Individuals with muscle disorders should discuss their medical history with their doctor, particularly if they have conditions like myasthenia gravis.
Before Taking This Medicine
Do not take ciprofloxacin if you are allergic to it or have any of the following conditions:
- Currently taking tizanidine;
- Allergic to other fluoroquinolones (e.g., gemifloxacin, levofloxacin);
- Taking theophylline.
Ciprofloxacin can cause tendon swelling or tears, particularly affecting the Achilles tendon. These issues may develop during treatment or even after stopping the medication. Higher-risk groups include children, older adults, those on steroid medications, or organ transplant recipients.
To ensure your safety, inform your doctor if you have a history of:
- Tendon or bone problems, arthritis, or joint issues;
- Circulatory problems or aneurysms;
- Heart conditions or hypertension;
- Genetic disorders like Marfan syndrome;
- Diabetes;
- Muscle or nerve disorders;
- Kidney disease;
- Seizures or epilepsy;
- Head injuries or brain tumors;
- Long QT syndrome;
- Low blood potassium levels.

How Should I Take Ciprofloxacin?
Take ciprofloxacin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Follow all instructions on your prescription label and any accompanying medication guides.
You may take ciprofloxacin with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole?do not crush, chew, or break it.
