In specific cases, Amoxicillin is used in conjunction with another antibiotic, clarithromycin (Biaxin), to effectively treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori. This powerful pairing may also involve medication to reduce stomach acid.
Important Information
While taking Amoxicillin, it's essential to note that it can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Discuss with your doctor alternative non-hormonal contraceptive methods (like condoms, diaphragms, or spermicides) to prevent pregnancy during your treatment. Always complete the full course, even if your symptoms improve before the infection is entirely resolved. Remember, this antibiotic is ineffective against viral infections, such as the common cold or flu. Never share Amoxicillin with others, even if they exhibit similar symptoms.
Antibiotic use can sometimes lead to diarrhea, occurring during treatment or even months after stopping the medication. If you experience severe or bloody diarrhea, discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately. Avoid anti-diarrheal medications unless directed by your healthcare provider.
Before Taking This Medicine
Do not take Amoxicillin if you are allergic to any penicillin antibiotics, including ampicillin, dicloxacillin, oxacillin, penicillin, or ticarcillin.

How Should I Take Amoxicillin?
Use Amoxicillin exactly as prescribed by your physician. Follow all instructions on your prescription label and do not change the dosage or frequency without professional guidance.
For optimal results, take the medication consistently at the same time each day. The Moxatag brand should be taken with food or within one hour after a meal, while other formulations may be taken with or without food?refer to your label for specific instructions.
If using liquid Amoxicillin, shake well before measuring a dose. Utilize the dosing syringe or a measuring spoon/cup; if you lack one, ask your pharmacist. You can take the liquid directly on your tongue or mix it with water, milk, baby formula, fruit juice, or ginger ale. Consume the entire mixture immediately and do not save any for later.
Chew chewable tablets thoroughly before swallowing. For extended-release tablets, swallow them whole?do not crush, chew, or break.
If you're undergoing long-term therapy, regular blood tests may be necessary, as well as monitoring of kidney and liver functions.
