What is Ciprofloxacin?

While fluoroquinolone antibiotics are effective, they carry the risk of serious side effects, some of which may be irreversible, such as tendon ruptures or nerve damage.
Important Information
Be aware that ciprofloxacin can cause significant side effects, including tendon problems, nerve damage, and severe mood or behavioral changes, as well as low blood sugar levels. If you experience symptoms such as headaches, excessive hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, confusion, agitation, or sudden joint pain, it?s crucial to stop taking the medication and consult your healthcare provider immediately.
In rare cases, ciprofloxacin may affect your aorta, leading to severe complications. Seek emergency medical help if you experience intense and persistent pain in your chest, back, or abdomen.
If you have a history of muscle disorders, particularly myasthenia gravis, inform your doctor, as ciprofloxacin may not be suitable for you.
Before Taking This Medication
Do not take ciprofloxacin if you have a known allergy to this antibiotic or if you are currently using:
- Tizanidine
- Other fluoroquinolones (such as gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, or ofloxacin)
- Theophylline
This medication can increase the risk of tendon swelling or tearing, particularly of the Achilles tendon, which may occur during treatment or even months after stopping the drug. The risk is heightened in certain populations, including children, older adults, those on corticosteroids, or individuals who have had organ transplants.
To determine if ciprofloxacin is right for you, share your medical history with your doctor, especially if you have:
- Tendon or bone problems, arthritis, or joint issues (especially in children)
- Circulatory disorders, aneurysms, or hardened arteries
- Heart conditions or hypertension
- Genetic disorders like Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
- Diabetes
- Muscle or nerve disorders (including myasthenia gravis)
- Kidney disease
- Seizures or epilepsy
- Head injuries or brain tumors
- Long QT syndrome (in yourself or a family member)
- Low potassium levels (hypokalemia)
Do not give this medication to a child without consulting a healthcare professional. The effects on unborn babies are not fully understood, so inform your doctor if you are pregnant. Breastfeeding while taking this medication is not recommended.
How to Take Ciprofloxacin
Take ciprofloxacin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read any accompanying medication guides.
You can take ciprofloxacin with or without food, but be sure to take it at the same time each day. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it.
