Discover Spiriva: Your Breathing Ally

Spiriva (tiotropium) is a powerful bronchodilator engineered to relax airway muscles, ensuring unobstructed airflow for effortless breathing.

This innovative medication primarily targets the prevention of bronchospasm?narrowing of the airways?in adults diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes ailments such as bronchitis and emphysema.

Additionally, Spiriva Respimat is suitable for both adults and children aged 6 and older, aiding in the prevention of asthma attacks, but it is not recommended for younger children.

Essential Information

Spiriva capsules are specifically designed for use with the HandiHaler device and should never be ingested. For optimal effectiveness, utilize one capsule at a time.

The Spiriva Respimat Inhalation Spray is packaged with an aluminum cartridge and a Respimat inhaler, tailored exclusively for this device. The sleek gray design of the Respimat inhaler features a transparent base for easy cartridge insertion and a handy dose indicator.

Prior to starting Spiriva, make sure to inform your healthcare provider of any conditions such as narrow-angle glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or bladder obstruction.

Keep in mind that Spiriva is intended for preventive care and should not be used for immediate relief of acute episodes. For sudden attacks, a fast-acting inhaler is recommended.

Important Considerations Before Using Spiriva

If you have an allergy to tiotropium or ipratropium (found in Atrovent, Combivent, DuoNeb), it is essential to avoid using Spiriva.

To ensure your safety, discuss your medical history with your doctor, particularly if you have:

  • Narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Kidney issues
  • Allergies to milk
  • An enlarged prostate or urinary difficulties

If you are pregnant, consult your healthcare provider, as the effects of tiotropium on unborn babies are not entirely known. However, uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy can lead to serious complications, including premature birth.

Breastfeeding while using this medication may pose risks, so it?s wise to have a conversation with your healthcare provider.

Spiriva Respimat is not suitable for children under 6 years of age.

Maximizing the Effectiveness of Spiriva

Follow your doctor?s instructions diligently when using Spiriva. The recommended dosage is 2 inhalations taken orally once daily. Adhere strictly to your prescription label, refraining from altering the dosage or duration.

Remember, Spiriva is not a rescue inhaler and will not provide immediate relief during a COPD exacerbation. If you notice a decrease in the effectiveness of your medications, consult your healthcare provider promptly.

Carefully review all patient information, medication guides, and instructional materials provided. Should you have any questions, don?t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare team.

For children using Spiriva Respimat, adult supervision is encouraged.

The Spiriva HandiHaler includes capsules and a specially designed inhaler. Each use requires loading one capsule into the device, closing the mouthpiece, and pressing the button to pierce the capsule for inhalation. Remember, you must take 2 inhalations to complete the dosage for one capsule.

Do not ingest Spiriva capsules; they are exclusively for use with the HandiHaler device. Dispose of any unused capsules immediately after removing them from the blister pack, as exposure to air can diminish their potency.

For Spiriva Respimat, insert the cartridge into the inhaler and twist the base until it clicks to dispense the medication. You?ll need two puffs to receive the complete dose.

Be aware that the Respimat inhaler will lock after dispensing 30 doses (or 60 puffs), with an indicator signaling when only 14 puffs (approximately 7 days) remain in the cartridge.

Regular lung function testing is crucial to ensure Spiriva continues to meet your health needs.

To maximize the benefits of Spiriva, use it consistently and be sure to refill your prescription before you run out.

Store both the capsules and the Respimat inhaler at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Avoid freezing and do not store capsules within the HandiHaler device.
