Treatment should only be considered when other blood conservation options are inadequate for surgeries anticipated to need 4 or more units for females or 5 or more units for males.
In addition, Dropoetin enhances red blood cell production during the perisurgical period, helping to reduce the need for allogeneic blood transfusions and address postoperative anemia in adult patients not suffering from iron deficiency who are undergoing major elective orthopedic surgeries. It is advisable for patients with moderate anemia (e.g., hemoglobin levels of 10-13 g/dL) without access to an autologous donation program and who are likely to experience moderate blood loss (900 to 1800 ml).
Dropoetin is also approved for treating anemia in patients with Low or Intermediate-1 risk Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), with candidates for therapy having a hemoglobin level below 10 g/dL.
