Duphaston is a specialized medication featuring dydrogesterone as its primary component. Classified as a progesterone agonist, this powerful female sex hormone is designed to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia, promoting hormonal health.
This medication is commonly prescribed for various conditions, including:
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
- Endometriosis
- Infertility
When combined with estrogen, Duphaston may also effectively manage secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods for six months or longer) and alleviate heavy or irregular bleeding.
Precautions
Duphaston is contraindicated in the following situations:
- Individuals with allergies to dydrogesterone or similar medications. Seek immediate medical attention for symptoms like skin rash, itching, redness, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
- Patients with deep vein thrombosis (blood vessel blockage).
- Those with hormone-dependent cancers.
- Individuals experiencing unexplained bleeding.
- Patients with liver dysfunction, as this medication can impact liver health. Contact your doctor if you notice symptoms such as right upper abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).
- People with a history of depression.
- Patients with porphyria.
While using Duphaston, regular breast self-exams are advised due to an increased risk of breast cancer when combined with estrogen.
Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Duphaston should only be taken during pregnancy if specifically prescribed by a healthcare professional. Additionally, this medication can pass into breast milk, so breastfeeding is not recommended while on Duphaston.
Administration Instructions

Drug Interactions
To ensure safety, avoid taking Duphaston with the following medications:
- Antiepileptic drugs, such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, and phenobarbital, as they may lower Duphaston?s effectiveness.
- HIV medications like ritonavir, indinavir, and saquinavir.
- Herbal supplements including St. John's wort, sage, and ginkgo biloba, which can also reduce the efficacy of Duphaston.
Always inform your doctor about all medications and herbal products you are taking.
