Ideal for patients who haven?t achieved relief through alternative treatments like acetaminophen, exercise, or physical therapy, Sodium Hyaluronate mimics a naturally occurring compound in your joints. By acting as a lubricant and shock absorber, it allows for smoother knee movement while significantly reducing discomfort.
Instructions for Use
Before initiating treatment with Hyalgan, and with each refill, carefully read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your healthcare provider. Should you have any questions, don?t hesitate to consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Administration will be carried out by your physician through an injection directly into the affected joint, typically on a weekly basis. Avoid using skin disinfectants containing ammonium salts (such as benzalkonium chloride) at the injection site. Your doctor may need to remove excess fluid from the joint prior to the injection. Dosage will be tailored to your individual medical condition and response to treatment.
IMPORTANT: Hyaluronate should never be injected into a vein or artery to prevent heightened side effects.
After your hyaluronate injection, it's advisable to avoid activities that could place strain on your knee?such as jogging, playing tennis, heavy lifting, or standing for extended periods? for 48 hours.
Some patients may experience increased pain and swelling in the knee post-injection. If these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your physician immediately.
Adhering to the injection schedule is crucial, as the full therapeutic effects may take up to three injections to fully manifest. Keep your doctor informed if your condition does not improve or deteriorates.
Potential Side Effects
While using this medication, you may encounter mild side effects such as pain, swelling, redness, warmth, bruising at the injection site, or headaches. Should these effects persist or worsen, please inform your doctor or pharmacist without delay.
Rest assured, your doctor has prescribed this treatment with the belief that the benefits outweigh any potential risks, and many patients do not experience serious side effects.
However, if you notice severe side effects such as significant back pain, a severe headache, rapid heartbeat, fever, or unusual skin sensations, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Though rare, serious allergic reactions to this medication can occur. Seek emergency medical help right away if you experience symptoms like a rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
