Discover Strattera: Your Ally in Managing ADHD

What is Strattera?

Strattera, infused with atomoxetine, is a specialized medication crafted for the effective management of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It?s perfect for:

  • Children aged six and older
  • Teenagers
  • Adults
  • As an essential part of a holistic ADHD treatment plan, Strattera delivers optimal results when paired with non-pharmacological strategies such as counseling and behavioral therapy. It is important to note that Strattera is not recommended for children under six due to limited safety and efficacy data for this age group.

For adults, Strattera is advised when ADHD symptoms hinder daily activities, including work and social interactions, particularly if these symptoms have persisted since childhood.

    How Does Strattera Work?

Strattera functions by boosting levels of noradrenaline, a natural brain chemical that improves focus while diminishing impulsivity and hyperactivity in those with ADHD. As a non-stimulant option, Strattera is non-addictive and may require several weeks for patients to experience significant symptom relief.

    Understanding ADHD: Overcoming Challenges

Children and teenagers grappling with ADHD often face:

  • Difficulty staying still
  • Challenges in maintaining attention
  • These challenges stem not from a lack of effort but can significantly disrupt daily life, impacting academic success and behavior at home and school. It?s vital to recognize that ADHD does not equate to a lack of intelligence.

In adults, ADHD can continue into adulthood, resulting in difficulties with:

  • Job performance
  • Personal relationships
  • Self-esteem
  • Educational goals
  • Essential Precautions for Strattera Use:

Do NOT take Strattera if you:

  • Are allergic to atomoxetine or any of its components (see section 6 for details)
  • Have recently taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) like phenelzine within the last two weeks, as this could lead to serious or life-threatening effects. Ensure a gap of at least 14 days after stopping Strattera before starting an MAOI.
  • Have narrow-angle glaucoma (increased eye pressure)
  • Have serious heart conditions that may worsen due to increased heart rate or blood pressure caused by Strattera
  • Have a history of vascular issues in your brain, such as stroke or aneurysm
  • Have an adrenal gland tumor (phaeochromocytoma)
  • If any of these apply to you, refrain from using Strattera and consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for guidance, as Strattera may worsen these conditions.

    Warnings and Considerations:

Before starting Strattera, individuals of all ages should review the following warnings. Consult your healthcare professional if you have:

  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors
  • Cardiac issues, including defects or rapid heartbeat?Strattera has been linked to increased heart rate and instances of sudden death in those with pre-existing heart conditions
  • High blood pressure, as Strattera may elevate it further
  • Low blood pressure, which could result in dizziness or fainting
  • Unusual changes in blood pressure or heart rate
  • A history of cardiovascular problems or strokes
  • Liver issues that may require a lower dosage
  • Psychotic symptoms (e.g., hallucinations or delusions)
  • Manic episodes or heightened agitation
  • Aggressive or hostile feelings
  • A history of seizures, as Strattera may increase seizure frequency
  • Mood swings or significant sadness
  • Involuntary movements or vocalizations
  • Be sure to discuss any of these concerns with your doctor or pharmacist before starting treatment, as Strattera may exacerbate these conditions.

    Pre-Treatment Assessments:

Your healthcare provider will perform specific evaluations to determine if Strattera is suitable for you, which includes monitoring:

  • Your blood pressure and heart rate before and during Strattera therapy
  • Your height and weight, particularly in children and adolescents throughout treatment
  • Other medications you are currently taking
  • Family history of sudden, unexplained deaths
  • Any significant medical conditions (such as heart issues) in your family
